Are you consumed by a passion that keeps you up at night and refuses to let you rest easy?
Are you constantly driven by a belief that you can achieve more, better yourself or create something awesome that so far only exists in your imagination?
Passion alone isn’t going to pay the bills…
I’m writing this post as a follow up to a previous article I wrote about passion – How To Turn Your Passion Into A Business. In it, I extolled the virtues of building a business based on your personal passions and interests, and spelled out 5 simple steps to getting your business up and running. In this post, I want to expand upon the idea of building a passion business and explore the other qualities that are necessary in order to achieve success at the highest level.
Here’s the thing…
Without a well defined strategy and a crystal clear vision, passion is just wasted energy.
I’ll say that again (cue dramatic music):
Passion without strategy and vision is WASTED ENERGY.
Passion alone isn’t enough to steer you to greatness.
Here’s what I believe are the three key ingredients to success:
Passion is the fuel that drives you. It is the energy and drive needed in order to achieve great things. Without it, you might as well give up now.
Vision is the essential tool without which you’re on a journey without a destination. It is your guide, your coach, your motivator and your reserve tank when battling through adversity or riding high on a wave of success. It is the big picture destination and your daily motivational talk. It positions you, guides your actions and keeps you from straying too far from the battleground.
And finally, strategy is your essential mission briefing needed to steer you in the right direction. It is your war room, your “How To” guide, without which you will be flailing directionless in a sea of your own wasted energy.
Or, to put it another way:
No one thing works without the other.
Think about it – sure, you might hit the jackpot and drive an idea to success through passion alone, but mostly you’ll find that no matter what you do, no matter how hard you work, you never seem to quite “get there”.
I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if this is your strategy – “to work hard and with passion” – you are almost certainly destined to fail. Not fail to work hard – you’ll definitely work hard – just fail to convert that hard work into success or achieve the life you dreamed of.
Don’t get me wrong, to live a life with passion is an incredible thing. Having the courage to live the life you want to live, pursuing your passions and making a living from it is one of life’s essential goals in my opinion. But if you are going to truly scale the heights and achieve everything you set out for yourself, you are going to need a strategy – a plan for how to get there; and a vision – a clear picture of where it is you want all that hard work to take you.
You need quantifiable goals and targets against which you can take action.
You need to take a step back to review the big picture…
I love doing “X”. It is my destiny to make a living doing “X”
When I fulfil my destiny and make my living from “X”, I am going to live like “Y”
I’m determined to make this happen. If I do “Z”, I think I could achieve “X” and “Y”. Here goes!

(* Chuck Norris is the exception to the rule. There’s always an exception to the rule)
Stay strong. Stay confident. Fill your life with things you are passionate about. Crystallise your vision and take time to craft an actionable strategy to get you there.
I promise it will serve you well.
